I won’t.

Come heeeere

Why are you getting so sentimental? My god, I can only imagine what your brain is like when I can’t hear it. It must be so ordinary…

The door to my flat is open, but I’m not coming. If you want to see me, you’re coming here.

*does not*

I couldn’t care less. And it just means I win, as always.

Boooooring. You’re being terribly predictable. You really would love to say that to my face, though, wouldn’t you? Too bad!

Fuck yes I would.

Come here and let me love you

You know, don’t think I will. Besides, insulting me is no way to get what you want, Sebastian…

I don’t want you.

Please come here and let me love you?

Ah…I see. And your thoughts don’t serve as an alternative. You still have to ask nicely.

I won’t.

Jim intertwined his finger’s with hers, smiling faintly. “Thank you, Molly. I mean it.” The idea of writing a confession letter to the police did sound rather entertaining, actually. Perhaps he’d send a little note in the future. Jail, however, did not sound nearly as much fun. “But…if I turned myself in, they wouldn’t help me. Not like you would. They’d just want to punish me.”

Molly swallowed hard as she looked down at their twined fingers. Had she missed having someone special in her life, or had she missed him? But this wasn’t Jimmy, this wasn’t the man she missed. And yet she was drawn to him.

Licking her lip nervously she shook her head a little. Forcing herself to meet his eyes she looked as stern as she could manage.

“Those are my terms, Jim. I won’t be moved. And as much as it pains me to say it, we both know you won’t see any jail time. You deserve to be punished, Jim. You’ve done terrible things. But if you do this. If you turn yourself in it might be enough to prove to me that you want to change.”

Apparently, she had at least a little bit of sense. Jim really didn’t feel like going through the whole arresting business again, though, and it definitely wasn’t worth the effort for a little game with Molly Hooper. But he’d gotten her again, regardless of how long it would last.

He nodded, holding her hand a bit tighter as if the contact were reassuring. It was vital that he give Molly the sense he needed her, that it was her job to help him. Responsibility was such a burden sometimes, wasn’t it?

“I’ll try, Molly,” he said sincerely, smiling a little more. “I really will.”

Her chest tightened a little when he squeezed her hand and without thinking she squeezed back. Licking her lips nervously, Molly gave the Criminal on her couch a nervous little smile. She wasn’t sure if he could change. Really change. But at the same time she wanted to believe it.

“Thanks Jim. I… It would mean a lot if you did try. Not just for me, but for yourself. This kind of life isn’t healthy. It’s just not.”

For a second, Jim actually listened to Molly’s words, really listened. Of course it wasn’t healthy. Nothing he did would affect his mind at this point, make him feel things when he killed people, but the boredom was excruciating. Often he’d work days on end, trying to distract himself, completely forgetting to eat until Sebastian reminded him. And sometimes he’d just sit in his room, turning a gun over in his hands while contemplating whether it’d be easier just to end it. It’d kill him someday, one way or another. But that was how the world worked, and Jim didn’t care.

He pushed the thoughts aside, instead focusing on the task at hand once again, and rubbed Molly’s hand gently with his thumb. “I know,” he replied, the first truthful thing he’d said the entire conversation. He’d embraced that fact a long time ago. Whatever he did would eventually destroy him.

“I know”

For some reason, those words sent shivers down her spine. But maybe this was a step in the right direction. If he was willing to admit that his lifestyle wasn’t healthy, and he was going to turn himself in to the police, then there was hope. There was always hope if someone was willing to try.

“So… what do we do now?”

Molly gave the man a small smile and shivered a little as his thumb gently rubbed her hand. A small part of her felt that was a little unfair of him. But maybe it was and unconscious gesture.

Jim’s eyes brightened a bit at the smile, and he figured it must be her loneliness that helped him get to her so easily. He remembered it had been only too easy to ask her for a date that first time—on her blog, of all places. She’d just been so eager for attention, for something other than the cold stares and obliviousness from Sherlock.

“You tell me, Molly,” he replied, his tone now slightly lighter than it was before. After thinking for a moment, he suddenly grinned and asked, “Where’s Toby?”

Molly blinked at the sudden change in conversation. One minute they were discussing his rehabilitation, the next he was asking about her cat. The sudden jolt made her realise she was still holding Jim’s hand, and she cleared her throat, sliding her smaller hand from his.

“I… um… I think he went outside. He usually comes back in around midnight.”

And just like that, the trance Jim held on Molly was broken. Good. Sentimental conversations like that did get so tedious after a while. Thank god the cat wasn’t around, either. Its hairs got on Jim’s clothes the last time he’d seen it, and, well…if Molly had been anyone other than herself, she would have ended up with a bullet in her brain. But for now, he had to play the game.

“Too bad,” he said, frowning. “But…thank you for inviting me, Molly. And thank you for helping me.”

Nice suit. Do I know you?

Westwood.

And you might, depending on how much you’ve heard. Jim Moriarty.

Yes. That name does seem to keep cropping up. I don’t, however, particularly believe in coincidence. I assume you already know who I am, if you’re here. Something I can do for you?

Of course. I probably know more about you than you do yourself.

I happen to have an open position for a sniper and thought you’d do nicely.

I’m not surprised. Can’t say I know too much about myself these days anyway. I’d do nicely, would I? Who says I’m looking for employ? Did you read ad? I’m freelance, mate. Not really looking to change that at the present.

Oh, I’m well aware, Sebastian. But I also know that the only reason you’re freelance is because the ordinary people bore you. So simple, aren’t they? I think you’ll find me a little more…interesting.

For a man that claims to know more about me than I do myself, you’re a bit off, eh? I could care less about “boring.” I don’t work for anyone but myself. If I wanted a boss, I’d have one. I’m the sharpest shot in all of Europe. I don’t really need a benefactor, thanks much. Now if you’d kindly tell your people following me wherever I go to shove off, assuming those two blokes that’ve been tailing me are yours,  I’ll be going now.

My, my, you’re a tough one, aren’t you? Good. It should make things more interesting, and I could do with a distraction. You don’t seem unbearably stupid, either.

If you’d like to be off on your merry way, I won’t object. I’ll send out my snipers, and you won’t be able to fight off all of them at once.

But of course, though you claim otherwise, I happen to know that you do get bored, and despite your little drinking habits, your women, your gambling…danger is what you want, and that’s exactly what I can give you.

Now, what do you say we have a little talk?

Not terrible. A bit bored, but otherwise fine.

Good to hear, Sir. I’d hate to think my boss wasn’t happy with someone. Even though it produces pretty productive work for me.

Find something to cure the boredom? Semtex, for example?

Finally, someone’s suggested a good idea.

Looks like there’s been a terrible explosion a few blocks away. What a shame.

Oops!
